 暑假里，苗族小朋友卡里应邀到荔江市城西小学学生蒙小民家做客。一天，他们和邻居女孩小艺一起到青石山采集昆虫标本。卡里制作出一幅精美的昆虫标本，其中包括一种很有研究价值的大突肩瓢虫。城西小学的邱老师对这个标本十分赞赏，小民的奶奶为炫耀孙子，就把制作这个标本的功荣全归于小民了。标本在假期学科学活动展览会上引起昆虫学家严教授的极大兴趣，便与邱老师一同访问小民。小民毫无准备，难以对答，在奶奶的诱导之下，他才编出一套谎话，得以解脱。由于这个标本，小民又获得全市暑假学科学活动展品一等奖。小民的母亲温莹对儿子的行为很气愤，又怕事情败露而损伤孩子的自尊心，所以一面狠狠批评小民，一面嘱咐小艺为小民隐瞒真情。奶奶出于对孙子的溺爱，也恳求卡里为小民保守秘密。小艺不自觉地向邱老师泄露了真情，当邱老师找卡里证实时，卡里为了朋友，竟矢口否认自己去过青石山，温莹意识到这样处理问题已引起恶果，使孩子们纯洁的心灵受到污染，想到丈夫蒙玉民在运动中就是因为拒绝说谎而被打致残，她深感内疚，决定去学校说明真相。这时，小艺隐瞒实情的行为，也被她的母亲林琴察觉。林琴忧心忡忡地向温莹倾吐了自己的担忧。正直的温莹再也忍受不住良心的谴责，到学校要求撤销对小民的奖励。不料，校长邓均正是在运动中曾威逼诬陷过蒙玉民的那个人。邓均刚刚上任，害怕这样做会给自己造成被动。他把这归结为"难以抗衡的社会风气"。温莹无力反驳，又退却了。小民的错误不 但未改，反而进一步发展了。他把小艺拾到的口琴占为已有，而这正是蒙玉民丢失的、准备送给儿子的礼物。蒙玉民为此十分生气，又得知小民获奖的真情，于是与妻子闹翻了。温莹体会到迁就孩子错误所造成的恶果，领悟到改变这种不正之风的重要和自己应尽的责任。后来，卡里向邱老师承认自己说谎的错误，小民由于畏惧离家出走，在火车站遇到严教授，被严教授带回自己家里。严教授耐心的启发和教育，终使小民觉悟，决心痛改前非。小民回到家中，事情真相都已大白，这却使邓均十分尴尬。不久，小民、卡里和小艺又结伴重返青石山，他们以自己辛勤的劳动，共同获得了名符其实的一等奖。
