简介:

  新婚情侣杨阳和周莉在做蜜月旅行。新娘周莉对蜜月充满了幸福的憧憬。新郎杨阳却不知道为什么总是在做噩梦,他认为梦中的人在纠缠他,认为梦中人不会放过自己。周莉对此很不满意,认为杨阳是自己吓唬自己。偏偏在这时候“房客”出现了,杨阳认为是梦中人走了出来,周莉也觉得有点害怕。二人在准备离开的时候路过了一个叫“鬼镇”的地方,本来想找旅馆住下,却因为“客满”而找不到地方。于是在一位加油员的介绍下来到了一个养老院。养老院的院长同意二人在这里留宿,并且是免费的。但是二人却并不为找到住处而高兴。因为在这里又见到了乞丐一样的“房客”,杨阳的那个“梦中人”。这里的院长似乎“有病”,不但非常尊重“房客”,还帮助“房客”来纠缠他们。无奈之下,只好同意让“房客”搭他们的车。但“房客”古怪的行为让二人哭笑不得,只好把“房客”送回养老院。回去后才发现院长不见了,而他们的汽车也在疏忽之下被“房客”开走了,二人沮丧地认为自己遇到了盗车团伙。二人回到加油站,周莉用“美人计”抓住了加油员并报了案。谁知道警察来了不但没有帮助他们还替加油员索取医疗费。并且十分肯定地告诉他们汽车没有丢。“房客”将他们的汽车开回来后依然行为古怪。二人坚定地认为这是一个犯罪团伙,于是再一次用“美人计”俘获了可怜的加油员并抢回了自己的汽车。正当这对情侣疯狂的“逃跑”时,警察再一次出现,再一次替加油员索取医药费,再一次把“房客”送了回来……

  本片改编自法国著名剧作家让·阿努伊的希腊神话题材戏剧《欧律狄刻》,将耳熟能详的经典爱情故事搬上现代舞台,赋予全新剧情,向原作致敬。影片更启用阿伦·雷乃御用班底,曾和雷乃在《疯草》一片中有过合作的编剧洛朗·埃尔比埃与雷乃一同完成了影片剧本的改写工作,女演员萨宾·阿泽玛更是与导演合作九次之多。91岁高龄的雷乃宝刀未老,携新作征战戛纳,入围第65届戛纳国际电影节主竞赛单元-金棕榈奖。

The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family's history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it's the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family's world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe's clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will.
